A new Platts report released this week by the European Commission has found that European industry operators and factories submitted a total of 254.6 million carbon dioxide offset credits, covering 13.4% of their total verified emissions for 2011.
This offsets figure exceeded industry expectations of an estimated230 million offsets, which sends a positive price signal for the UN offset scheme.
The 254.6 million offsets submitted include 178.8 million Certified Emission Reductions from emissions reduction projects in developing countries under the UN's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The remaining 75.8 million offsets submitted in 2011 were Emissions Reduction Units from projects in industrialised countries under the UN's Joint Implementation program.
Under the rules of the EU ETS, regulated companies are permitted to utilise a set value of United Nations CO2 offset credits, as dictated by limits set from each member state, to help meet their CO2 caps under the system.
