German environment agency Umweltbundesamt (UBA) said on Friday the country's greenhouse gases emissions were down 8.4 percent year-on-year in 2009 at 80 million tonnes.
The result has been broadly anticipated because industrial activity in Europe's biggest economy was sharply down last year due to the economic crisis.
The six so-called Kyoto gases, which contribute to global warming and have to be cut under European Union envrionmental laws, include most prominently the heaviest pollutant, carbon dioxide (CO2).
