U.S Navy debuts new “Great Green Fleet”

The US Navy has launched its biofuel powered "Great Green Fleet" this week in a move that will generate significant fuel reduction and lower carbon emissions from the naval fleet.

The full power of naval vessels and aircraft fuelled by advanced biofuels, a mixture of conventional jet fuel with recycled cooking grease and algae oil, are undergoing their first operational tests in the waters of the central Pacific. The fleet is expected to consume 900,000 gallons of a 50-50 blend of advanced biofuels and traditional petroleum-based fuel.

Advanced Biofuels Association President Michael McAdams called the move a 'significant achievement for America's domestic biofuels industry.'

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said that this week's demonstration proved that the green fuels blend, whilst about four times more costly per gallon than conventional fuels, was safe and effective in combat situations."Those aircraft are flying the way they always do. The ships steamed the way they always do. There was no difference with the fuel," he commented.

The so-called Great Green Fleet is a key element of the Pentagon initiative to use the buying power of the U.S. military - the world's largest single oil consumer - to help foster a competitive biofuels industry.
