The launch of this new initiative, the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, comes six months after the Paris Agreement, where they both, announced their intention to expand their efforts and their intention to engage in a formal partnership.
Both initiatives have supported voluntary participation of local governments and cities in setting ambitious climate reduction goals and strong action to reach those objectives. The Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, which will be launched by 1st January, 2017, aims to simplify citizen participation, focusing on a single commitment with both local and global relevance, providing main data on energy and climate action and allowing to check the achievements and exchange good practices with their peers all around the world.
